CrN powder has excellent physical and mechanical properties and has been identified as a superior coating material. Industrial CrN powder is typically prepared by reactions of chromium hydrides with nitrogen plus hydrogen or ammonia or chromium metals with ammonia. The reaction usually takes a long time. It has recently been reported that Chromium nitride powder can be prepared by high-energy reaction milling, mechanically activated synthesis (MAS), benzene thermal preparation, and high-temperature self-mixing synthesis (SHS). CrN powder can be obtained after high-energy grinding of chromium into nitrogen. However, there is no doubt that frictional contamination of the grinding media must be present in the final product due to long-term grinding and the process is not an economical method due to the high energy consumption. The MAS process mechanically activates the reagents at room temperature via a high-energy ball mill and then completes the synthetic reaction at high temperatures. For the benzene-thermal route, the need for high purity of raw materials, the potential danger in handling organic solvents at high temperatures, and the slow production rate make them difficult to apply in practice. The particle size of the CrN powder prepared by SHS is microns in size. In this study a direct nitriding method for nanocrystalline synthesis. For the first time, Chromium nitride powder are reported, using Cr2O3 powder as the starting material.
