Osmium Nanopowder

Osmium is a chemical element with the symbol Os and atomic number 76. It is a bluish, hard, and brittle white transition metal in the platinum group which is found as a trace element in the alloys, mainly in the platinum minerals. Osmium is the densest natural element, with an experimentally measured density of 22.59 g / cm3. Producers use their alloys with platinum, iridium, and other metals from the platinum group to perform the tips, electrical contacts, and in other applications that require extreme durability and hardness. The abundance of the element in the earth’s crust is among the rarest.

Polished silver metal, corrosion-resistant. It is the densest of all elements and twice as dense as lead.

Osmium has no known biological role. The metal is non-toxic, but its oxide is volatile and highly toxic, causing damage to the lungs, skin, and eyes.

Osmium occurs naturally in an unbound form, as well as in the mineral osmiridium (an alloy with iridium). Osmium is mainly obtained on an industrial scale from nickel refining waste.

Osmium has only a few uses. It is used to make very hard alloys for fountain pen nibs, instrument shafts, needles, and electrical contacts. It is also used in the chemical industry as a catalyst.
